Description
Melissa essential oil is extracted from Melissa officinalis from the Labiatae family. It is also referred to as balm, lemon balm, common balm, sweet balm and bee balm.
Precautions
This oil is non-toxic; however it still may cause irritation and sensitization and should be used in low dilutions. Avoid during pregnancy.
Therapeutic Properties
Melissa oil's therapeutic properties include anti-depressant, carminative, digestive, hypotensive, sedative and tonic.
Uses
Melissa essential oil calms nerves, hysteria, panic and depression. It slows the heartrate, reduces blood pressure and is a good tonic for the heart. It helps to regulate the menstrual cycle and ease painful periods.
As a digestive it settles the system, helping to ease nausea, vomiting, flatulence, dysentery and dyspepsia. It has a cooling effect which benefits febrility. It relieves headaches and migraines associated with colds.
Topically it can used on herpes simplex.
